Sorrowful Mysteries

Stay close to Jesus in His Passion, bringing the suffering of your own life and of the world into prayer.

THE FIRST SORROWFUL MYSTERY

The Agony in the Garden

Matthew 26:36–46

Jesus prays honestly in His anguish. You do not need to hide your fear or sorrow from God; ask for strength to remain faithful in the next difficult moment.

For reflection: Surrender to God
THE SECOND SORROWFUL MYSTERY

The Scourging at the Pillar

John 19:1

Jesus endures violence and humiliation. Pray for those whose dignity is wounded, and ask for the courage to respect and protect the dignity of others.

For reflection: Purity of heart
THE THIRD SORROWFUL MYSTERY

The Crowning with Thorns

Matthew 27:27–31

Jesus is mocked as a king. Bring Him the pain of being misunderstood, and ask for freedom from the need to answer cruelty with cruelty.

For reflection: Courage
THE FOURTH SORROWFUL MYSTERY

The Carrying of the Cross

John 19:16–17; Luke 23:26–32

Jesus carries the cross and receives help along the way. Name the burden you carry today, and remember that accepting help can be an act of humility.

For reflection: Patience
THE FIFTH SORROWFUL MYSTERY

The Crucifixion

Luke 23:33–46

Jesus gives His life in love. Pray for those who are dying or grieving, and entrust to His mercy what you cannot repair by your own strength.

For reflection: Self-giving love

These reflections were written for this prayer guide. Scripture references are provided for further reading. The Assumption and Coronation draw on Catholic doctrine and scriptural imagery.
